hier alvast vele gebeurtenissen die in 2008 in Tsjechie zullen plaats vinden.

JANUARY
1. - National holiday of the Czech Republic - Day of Restoration of the Independent Czech State (in 1993).
- President Vaclav Klaus delivers New Year's Day speech.
- Law on stabilisation of public finances takes effect
- Electricity prices for households rise by an average of 9.1 percent.
- Main Czech gas supplier RWE Transgas raises gas prices for households rise by an average of 7.4 percent, Prazska plynarenska raises gas prices for all customers by an average of 6.23 percent, and E.ON by an average of 7.5 percent.
- Ceska posta postal service raises prices of some services. Prices of letters rise from 7.50 to 10 crowns.
- All foreigner and border police offices are abolished and replaced by foreigner police inspectorates.
2. - President Vaclav Klaus has lunch with Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek at presidential chateau in Lany, central Bohemia.
3. - President Vaclav Klaus has lunch with the chairmen of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, Premysl Sobotka and Miloslav Vlcek, respectively, at Prague Castle.
9. - Government holds the first session in 2008.
27.- Significant Day of the Czech Republic - Day of Holocaust Remembrance and Prevention of Crimes against Humanity (commemorates liberation of Auschwitz/Oswiecim concentration camp in 1945).
31.- Feature film Citizen Havel depicting background of Havel's presidential period (1989-2003) appears in cinemas.

FEBRUARY
5. - The last day when candidates for new head of state can be nominated.
8. - Presidential election starts at a joint session of both houses of parliament.
17.- Exhibition on Albrecht of Wallenstein, renowned Czech nobleman, politician and army commander (1583-1634), ends. It started on November 15, 2007.

MARCH
5. - 10th documentary film festival One World starts, to last until March 13.
7. - President Vaclav Klaus's five-year term of office expires
8. - Significant day of the Czech Republic - International Women's Day.
12.- 12. - Significant day of the Czech Republic - Day of the Czech Republic's Accession to NATO in 1999.
27.- 15th film, television and video festival Febiofest starts in Village Cinemas Andel in Prague, to last until April 4.
28.- Teachers' Day (anniversary of birth of famous Czech teacher and philosopher Jan Amos Komensky in 1592).
30.- Summer time starts. At 02:00 clocks shift forward to 03:00. The summer time ended on October 26.

APRIL
7. - Significant day of the Czech Republic - Day of Education (commemorates the establishment of university in Prague in 1348 by Emperor Charles IV as the first university in Central Europe).
17.- 15th Days of European Film festival starts, to last in Prague, Brno until late April.
22.- Earth Day - international environment holiday. In the Czech Republic it was celebrated in 1990 for the first time.
24.- BookWorld Prague international book fair opens at Prague's Vystaviste (exhibition grounds); to last until April 27.

MAY
World premiere of former Czech president Vaclav Havel's latest play Leaving (Odchazeni) in Prague's Archa theatre.
1. - Labour Day
- Passports issued with digital fingerprints, along with digital photographs (issued since September 1, 2006).
5. - Significant day of the Czech Republic - anniversary of May 1945 uprising against German occupation.
8. - National holiday - Victory Day, marking the liberation from fascism in 1945.
9. - Europe Day.
12.- Opening concert of 63rd Prague Spring International music festival with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Peter Altrichter performing. Festival programme continues through June 4.
11.- Mother's Day.
15.- Significant day of the Czech Republic - Family Day (The U.N. General Assembly declared May 15 international family day in 1993 to highlight the importance of the family in society).
- 10th Khamoro international festival of Romany culture held at the turn of May and June.

JUNE
1. - International Children's Day.
- 18th international Writers' Festival Prague starts to be held until June 5.
10.- Significant day of the Czech Republic - Lidice village obliteration (commemorates the razing of Czech village Lidice to the ground by Nazis in 1942 as a revenge for the assassination of German Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich).
14.- 45th International Television Festival Golden Prague focused on music and dance TV programmes, to last until June 18.
18.- 50th Smetana's Litomysl international music festival starts to last until July 5.
27.- Significant day of the Czech Republic - Day in Memory of Victims of Communist Regime (commemorates the execution of Czech democratic politician Milada Horakova in 1950 after a framed-up trial in communist Czechoslovakia).
30.- Day of Czech Armed Forces (Military Day).

JULY
4. - 43rd International Film Festival starts in Karlovy Vary, west Bohemia, to last until July 12.
5. - National holiday - Day of Slavonic missionaries Cyril (Constantine) and Methodius (anniversary of their arrival in Moravia in 863).
6. - National holiday - Day of burning of (church reformer) Jan Hus (John Huss) to death at the stake (in 1415)
25.- 33rd Summer Film School starts in Uherske Hradiste, south Moravia, will last until August 3.

AUGUST
22.- Fresh Film Fest review of student films starts in Karlovy Vary, west Bohemia, to last until August 26.
31.- 50-heller coins go out of circulation, may be exchanged in commercial banks until year's end, afterwards in the CNB central bank only.

SEPTEMBER
12.- World postage stamps exhibition, Praga 2008, and the 11th international trade fair of postage stamps, coins, telephone cards, minerals and collecting, Collector, starts to last until September 14.
13.- Days of European Heritage start, to last until September 21.
28.- Holiday of St Wenceslas, main Czechs's patron saint.
National holiday - Day of Czech Statehood.

OCTOBER
26.- Summer time ends - clocks go 60 minutes back at 03:00. It started on March 30.
28.- National holiday - Day of Foundation of Czechoslovak State (commemorates day of establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918).

NOVEMBER
11.- Significant Day of Czech Republic - Veterans Day (commemorates veterans of all war conflicts - Entente allies concluded armistice with Germany on November 11, 1918, World War I ended).

17.- National holiday - Day of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy (commemorates student demonstrations during Nazi occupation in 1939 and during the communist regime in 1989).

DECEMBER
Day of Fostering - declared in 2007 for the first time.
