Czech footwear output lowest in history in 2005
PRAGUE, Feb 13 (CTK) - Czech footwear output, battered by imports of cheap Chinese shoes, fell to the lowest volume in memory in 2005, the Aktualne.cz server said today, citing the Czech Footwear Association. Czech producers turned out 5.5 million pairs of shoes in 2005, less than half of the number produced four years earlier. Imports jumped to more than 73 million pairs in 2005, of which 80 percent came from China, said the server. The average price of a pair of Chinese shoes reached CZK 42. The average wage in the Czech Republic amounted to CZK 18,833 in the third quarter of 2005. The European Commission started investigations in 2005 to find out whether Chinese and Vietnamese footwear is sold below production costs in the EU. In turn, China warned it may file a complaint with the World Trade Organization if the EU imposes anti-dumping duties on local footwear. |

FinMin says Czech self-employed numbers up in 2005
PRAGUE, Feb 13 (CTK) - The number of self-employed Czechs grew slightly in 2005, Finance Ministry spokeswoman Petra Krainova told CTK today, citing tax office data. The number of people paying individual income tax on income from business and other self-employment activities was up by 18,000 year-on-year to 1.851 million in 2005, she added. But Economic Chamber president Jaromir Drabek said these data cut no ice because they included self-employed people who are not active. He added data from the Czech Social Security Administration (CSSZ) were more important, because they reckon only with active self-employed Czechs. The CSSZ has said the number of self-employed Czechs fell by 35,000 to 910,800 in 2005. Experts said the drop was due to administrative reasons, but entrepreneurs said it was caused by tax changes introducing the so-called minimum tax. Krainova added tax offices registered 54,000 new taxpayers and removed 36,000 from their files in this category. The number of new registrations was 50 percent higher than that of removals in 2005, against 63 percent in 2004, she said. |

Microsoft raises sales in Czech Republic, Slovakia 13 percent in 2005
PRAGUE, Feb 13 (CTK) - Software giant Microsoft's branch for the Czech Republic and Slovakia last year increased sales by 13 percent in the full year, and by 23 percent in the fourth quarter alone, spokesman Jiri Grund said. In the next three years, Microsoft plans a growth of 17-25 percent annually, said Grund not disclosing either the figure for sales or the bottom line. The sale of Microsoft Dynamics corporate solutions increased by 23 percent and the number of clients buying these grew by 133. In the second half of the year, the growth accelerated to 45 percent. "We want to maintain the current pace of growth," said Grund. Server solutions sales rose by 18 percent. The sale of the Windows operation system used by 65 percent of all servers in the two countries and installed on three out of four newly acquired servers also posted a two-digit growth. |

CD rail operator puts 2005 loss at CZK 589 million, CZK 32 million less yr/yr
PRAGUE, Feb 13 (CTK) - Czech rail operator Ceske drahy CD lost CZK 589 million last year, which would be an improvement of CZK 32 million on the year, according to preliminary results which CTK has at its disposal. CD's plan counted on a CZK 690 million loss last year. CD supervisory board will be discussing the company's results on Tuesday. Operating loss is predicted to have grown to CZK 772 million from 2004 's CZK 653 million. A much lower operating loss had been planned. CD revenues are put at CZK 45.297 billion, CZK 684 million less on the year and CZK 1.1 billion less than planned. Revenues from freight transport stood at a preliminary CZK 16.528 billion, as against CZK 17.679 billion in 2004. They are CZK 1.271 billion lower than planned. Passenger transport revenues were CZK 124 million higher against 2004, amounting to CZK 5.425 billion, but CZK 75 million lower than planned. CD costs totalled CZK 45.887 billion, down by CZK 716 million on the year and by CZK 1.25 million against the plan. Lower wage costs were behind the decrease, a drop of CZK 798 million against 2004 and of CZK 823 million against the CD plan. Wage costs reached CZK 16.215 billion. The supervisory board will also deal with a forensic audit CD ordered because of the Pendolino project. Instead of 10 Pendolino trains, only 7 trains were supplied and were launched with a delay of many years. The audit has nothing to do with the problems of the trains early this year. CD management has not yet calculated damage or fine to be imposed on the Pendolino producer, but it should be in the order of dozens of millions of crowns. |
