Volgende week op 28 oktober wordt in Tsjechië Den vzniku samostatného Československého státu (onafhankelijkheidsdag) gevierd. Op die dag, in 1918 is Tsjechoslowakije ontstaan, door uiteenvallen van de Donau-monarchie (Oostenrijk-Hongarije).

Zoals gewoonlijk worden op zo’n dan onderscheidingen uitgedeeld, dit jaar in totaal aan 21 personen. De bedoeling is dat het pas bekend gemaakt wordt op dag van viering, maar soms lekt er iets uit, zoals nu. Dit zijn enkele namen:

Jana Brejchová – actrice
Ája Vrzáňová – schaatskampioene
Roman Šebrle – tienkamp kampioen
Václav Hořejší – moleculair genetisch wetenschapper
Josef Kocourek – parlement stenograaf
František Fajtl – oorlogsheld, RAF vlieger
Otakar Vinklář – vlieger, gevangen gezeten in 50e jaren
Tomáš Sedláček – generaal, gevangen gehouden door de communisten
Rudolf Severin Krzák (i.m.) - generaal, leider van de speciale eenheid in Engeland, in zijn unit zaten o.a. Josef Gabčík a Jan Kubiš (Reinhard Heydrich missie)

als ze dit vieren wat moet ik mij erdan bijvoorstellen, mijn ouders zitten dan in tsjechie bij cheb of karlovy vary wisten ze nog niet.

Volgens mij worden nationale feestdagen in Tsjechië niet echt gevierd (behoudens dan enige officiële plichtplegingen in Praag of zo); Tsjechen hebben hun bekomst van dit soort vieringen; het idee dat het een 1-mei toestand wordt waar velen allergisch voor zijn. Op zich wel jammer, want ik vind 30 april wel grappig (weet dat vele Tsjechen daar anders over denken...) en 4-5 mei ook waardevol.
Trouwens, wel interessant dat het ontstaan van een inmiddels niet meer bestaande staat wordt gevierd...

President Václav Klaus heeft vanmorgen een krans gelegd bij het graf van eerste Tsjechoslowaakse president: Tomáš Masaryk.

President Klaus decorates 21 personalities at Prague Castle

PRAGUE- President Vaclav Klaus decorated 21 personalities on the occasion of the 86th anniversary of the establishment of the Czechoslovak independent state at Prague Castle tonight.

Legendary pilot Frantisek Fajtl and Rudolf Severin Krzak, who died recently and who trained Czechoslovak soldiers in Britain who were then sent to the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia are among the decorated persons.
Josef Kocourek, who died recently and who was the oldest and the longest-serving parliamentary stenographer in the world, also received a state decoration.

The highest Czech state decoration is the Order of the White Lion. It is awarded in three classes and two groups - civilian and military. Fajtl and Krzak both received the Order of the White Lion in military group.

The second highest state decoration is the Order of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, called after Czechoslovakia's first president, in office in 1918-35. President Klaus today bestowed four T.G.M orders, 3rd class. They went to member of the anti-communist resistance movement Otokar Vinklar, who was imprisoned by the communists in the 1950s, and to Tomas Sedlacek, 86, who was also sentenced by the communists.

Arnost Kubik, 69, who was imprisoned by the communists and pater Josef Zlamal, 89, who has worked in Prague since 1989 and is the prior of the Czech branch of the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta, received the same decoration.
Klaus today also conferred Medal of Merit on 15 persons, including Vaclav Bostik, one of the most significant Czech artists in the second half of the 20th century, parliamentary stenographer Josef Kocourek, who died recently, famous Czech film director Otakar Vavra, 93, and actress Jana Brejchova.
The same award went to radio director and script writer Josef Henke, worldwide renowned molecular immunologist Vaclav Horejsi, one of the best-known contemporary Czech painter Josef Jira, long-serving director of the clinic of plastic surgery professor Radana Koenigova, university lecturer and wine cultivator Vilem Kraus and Czech Philharmonic Orchestra chief conductor Zdenek Macal.

In memoriam, the Medal for Merit was awarded to outstanding Czech film director and script writer Karel Kachyna.

The same decoration went to historian of philosophy and Emeritus Professor of Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague Milan Sobotka, 77, decathlete, world record holder and Olympic winner Roman Sebrle, figure-skater Alena Steindlerova- Vrzanova and university lecturer Ladislav Tondl.
